About

Church House is an independently owned stay in the heart of Scarborough’s Old Town, created by local host Joe Healey.

Born and raised in Scarborough, Joe returned to his hometown after eight years living in London. Church House brings together his love of old buildings, interiors, travel and the Yorkshire coast.

The building itself has a much longer story. Dating back to 1701 and originally built as a chapel, Church House has been part of this corner of Scarborough for more than three centuries. Today, The Loft at Church House offers a characterful two-bedroom place to stay, just moments from South Bay and beneath Scarborough Castle.

After six years serving in the British Army, including a tour of Afghanistan, Joe spent years travelling throughout the UK and further afield. Some of the best independent hotels, guesthouses and restaurants encountered along the way have influenced what Church House has become — not by trying to recreate a hotel, but by borrowing the things that make a stay memorable: comfortable beds, interesting interiors, local knowledge, thoughtful details and genuinely good hospitality.

Church House isn’t a hotel or a large holiday-let company. There’s just one guest apartment, and that’s intentional.

We want staying here to feel personal, relaxed and distinctly Scarborough. Whether you’re visiting for the beach, walking the Yorkshire coast, seeing a show, celebrating something or simply disappearing to the seaside for a few days, we’ll do our best to make you feel at home.
